TRUSTED BY THESE WELL KNOWN BRANDS AND HUNDREDS MORE.
Poor East Ham! Very few medieval churches have to put up with a Victorian sewage pipe as a neighbour. Yet needs must - and this one was constructed by the great sanitary engineer, Joseph Bazalgette in 1864. St Mary Magdalene is a large, impressive medieval church, with its equally impressive churchyard. It has Roman bricks in the walls, Norman doorway and rare timbers - and 14th century bell inscribed with the name of Gabriel. The local Henry the Eighth and Anne Boleyn connections (despite the pub, football ground, cinema and street names) may be tenuous - as Henry is only reputed to have stayed with the lady at Green Street House (later known as Boleyn Castle).. The house was certainly good enough for a royal visit: having a fine staircase and wooden panelling.
